TORONTO – The curtains partitioning suspended between the beds to protect the privacy of patients in hospital can become contaminated with drug-resistant bacteria and may contribute to the spread of these germs in hospitals, says a U.S. study…

Researchers from Cleveland, Ohio, showed that one can find the bacterium Clostridium difficile, Staphylococcus aureus resistant to methicillin (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE) on the curtains.

They also found that microbes can migrate to the hands of persons handling the contaminated curtains, suggesting that hospital employees who draw the curtains and then touch patients may spread bacteria.

These results will be published in the November issue of the journal Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, and were presented Tuesday as part of a scientific conference in Washington, DC

With colleagues, Dr. Curtis Donskey, director of infection control at a hospital in Cleveland and author of the study, tested the curtains of their establishment. The researchers found that 42 percent of the curtains were contaminated with VRE, which can infect wounds and the urinary tract, among others, and 22 percent by MRSA, which can cause pneumonia and blood infections and affected organs during surgery. Four percent of the curtain showed traces of the bacterium C. difficult.

Four hundred thousand people over 60 years, all health plans combined, are reported in long-term or condition of treatment for Alzheimer’s disease or related, as a point of health insurance.

In the context of Alzheimer Plan, designed at the initiative of President of the Republic, the Health Insurance led the study.

The average age of these patients was 82 years old and 87.7% of them are 75 years or more. Nearly 72% of them are women.

This number of 400,000 is well below the estimated number of patients – about 850,000 – but half are not diagnosed or declared.

However, the 11.3% increase per year for three years to support a fancy lanyard duration (ALD support 100%) for Alzheimer’s disease shows that patients are increasingly supported specifically for this disease.

People with Alzheimer’s are also hospitalized more frequently (40% more than other insured persons of similar age).

Because of their illness, they are five times more often hospitalized for nervous system disorders (mental disorders, degenerative diseases…) and 10 times for psychiatric reasons than the rest of the population. These patients are also more frequently hospitalized for respiratory infections (2.4 times), infections, kidney and urinary tract (2 times), fractures (2.3 times) and bowel obstruction (2.2 times). Same age, the use of medical transport is 2 times higher in the year (2007).
